Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Connecticut
Compassionate, Evidence-Based Care for Dual Diagnosis
When a person struggles with both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder, the path to recovery can feel incredibly complex. This situation, known as a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders, requires a specialized and integrated form of care. Dual diagnosis treatment in Connecticut at High Watch Recovery Center integrates addiction and mental health care within a 12-step–anchored residential program. Founded in 1939 in Kent, our nonprofit team offers medical detox, residential treatment, and continuing care so you can build lasting recovery with dignity and support.
What Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment?
Dual diagnosis treatment, also called treatment for co-occurring disorders, is a unified approach for people experiencing both a substance use disorder and one or more mental health conditions at the same time. Rather than treating each condition separately, integrated care recognizes that mental health and substance use are deeply intertwined, with one condition frequently triggering or worsening the other.
A person might drink to quiet anxiety, only to find that alcohol intensifies it over time. Chronic substance use can also induce or deepen symptoms of depression or psychosis. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), millions of adults in the U.S. live with co-occurring disorders.
Effective dual diagnosis care addresses the psychological roots of the mental health condition and the behavioral patterns of addiction together, within the same treatment plan, delivered by the same clinical team.
What Mental Health Conditions Do We Treat Alongside Addiction?
Our clinical team is equipped to treat a wide spectrum of mental health conditions that co-occur with addiction to alcohol, opioids, and the other substances we treat. Commonly treated conditions include:
Mood Disorders
Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. Individuals with bipolar disorder, for instance, may engage in impulsive substance use during manic phases or use substances to cope with depressive episodes.
Anxiety Disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, and Social Anxiety are frequently linked with substance use as individuals attempt to self-medicate overwhelming worry, fear, or panic.
Trauma-Related Disorders
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has a high rate of co-occurrence with substance use. Individuals may use drugs or alcohol to numb intrusive memories, avoid trauma-related feelings, or manage hypervigilance.
Personality Disorders
Conditions like Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can involve emotional dysregulation and impulsive behaviors that increase the risk for substance misuse.
Psychotic Disorders
For individuals with conditions like schizophrenia, substance use can worsen symptoms such as paranoia and hallucinations, complicating treatment for the primary mental illness.
Other Conditions
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is also commonly seen in dual diagnosis cases, where impulsivity can contribute to substance use.
How Does High Watch's Dual Diagnosis Treatment Work?
At High Watch, dual diagnosis care begins the moment a guest arrives. A thorough integrated assessment, covering a full psychiatric evaluation, medical workup, and substance use history, is conducted by our multidisciplinary team of physicians, psychiatric providers, licensed therapists, and recovery coaches to develop a precise understanding of how the co-occurring disorders interact.
For those who need it, treatment begins with medically supervised detox at our on-campus detox center, where our medical staff carefully manages withdrawal symptoms while attending to any emerging mental health needs. Guests then transition into our residential program, where the core of treatment takes place:
- Individualized therapy: Regular one-on-one sessions with a primary therapist experienced in co-occurring disorders.
- Psychiatric care: Consistent appointments with our psychiatric team for medication management and monitoring.
- Group therapy: Clinician-led groups focused on skill-building, processing emotions, and peer support.
- 12-Step integration: Guided work on the 12 Steps with a recovery coach to address the spiritual and behavioral dimensions of addiction.
Because one clinical team manages the whole plan, both conditions are treated concurrently, not in sequence and never in isolation.
"When someone arrives carrying both an addiction and untreated depression, anxiety, or trauma, we don't ask which came first. We treat the whole person from day one. That's what makes recovery hold."
- Lauren Woods, LCSW, Clinical Director, High Watch Recovery Center

What Levels of Care Are Available for Dual Diagnosis Treatment?
Co-occurring disorders are best treated across a full continuum of care, so support can step down gradually as stability grows. At High Watch, that continuum includes:
- Medically supervised detox: Typically the first step, ensuring physical safety and stabilization.
- Residential treatment: 24/7 clinical and medical supervision in a structured environment; the most intensive level and the core of the High Watch Program.
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): The Hilltop, our on-campus step-down program for men who have completed a minimum of 28 days of residential treatment.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Our Online IOP offers virtual programming, several hours a day and several days a week, for those with enough stability to manage daily responsibilities while continuing robust therapeutic support.
- Continuing care: Guests may continue their recovery through continuing care at Hope House, our working farm, along with alumni programming and ongoing community support.
How Long Does Dual Diagnosis Treatment Take?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how long dual diagnosis treatment takes. The optimal duration depends entirely on the individual's unique needs, including the severity of their conditions, their progress in treatment, and any co-occurring medical issues.
While some programs offer 30-day stays, research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) indicates that outcomes are significantly improved with longer engagement, suggesting at least 90 days for the most effective results. The complexity of treating dual diagnoses often means that a more extended period of care is beneficial.
Treatment duration is also influenced by an individual's movement through the stages of change. A skilled clinical team will continuously assess a client's progress, adjusting the treatment plan and recommending the appropriate length of stay to ensure a strong foundation for lasting recovery is built before they transition to a lower level of care.
What Should I Expect During Dual Diagnosis Treatment?
Entering a dual diagnosis program is a courageous step, and knowing what to expect can ease the transition:
- A comprehensive intake: Upon arrival, you'll meet with our clinical and medical teams for assessments that shape your personalized treatment plan.
- A structured daily schedule: Days blend individual counseling, specialized groups on topics like coping skills and trauma, and psychiatric care.
- Evidence-based therapies: CBT to identify and change negative thought patterns; DBT skills for emotional regulation and distress tolerance; EMDR where trauma is present.
- Family involvement: Our family treatment program offers family therapy and educational workshops so loved ones understand co-occurring disorders and learn how to support your recovery.
- Holistic and experiential activities: Mindfulness, art therapy, farm programming, and equine-assisted learning through The Equus Effect support healing at every level.
